5/20/09: Julia stands on a downed redwood (known as the Flat Iron tree for its peculiar shape). Because of the massive rainfall in this area of the country, the trees have shallow root systems. This renders them vulnerable to toppling, especially when their environment is disturbed. Fallen trees are a natural part of the ecosystem though: they'll rot an inch (in thickness) each year, providing nutrients for future generations of forest plants. |
