4/3/09: The Rio Grande was low because there hasn't been any rain since September and the snow hasn't melted in the northern reaches of the river yet. Seeing this makes our attempts at border control seem pointless. The only real thing that can stop people from coming across (aside from crazy and dangerous vigilantes with guns) is the massive desert that's in the way. This part of the Chihuahuan desert is more like a no man's land than part of either country; few people want to live here, and walking across the river does you just about as much good as crossing the street. |
