Day 2 at Yellowstone posted: 6/11/09 by Julia
We enter the park through the north entrance today, dropping south on 89 from Livingston. This entrance has a huge stone gate from back when the park was founded. John and I agree that this must have been where Stephen Spielberg got the inspiration for the Jurassic Park gate. “What’ve they got in there? King Kong?”
Mammoth Hot Springs. We walk on boardwalks
Driving Through Montana posted: 6/9/09 by Julia
We left Glacier today, partly wishing we could do more there, but partly wishing to sleep in a warm bed instead. Last night was cold, real cold, and even though we have sleeping bags graded for 25 degrees or less it was hard for us to sleep comfortably. We struck camp, had some peanut butter and jelly for breakfast and drove back up to Lake McDonald one more time to get some pictures. We skipped stones on the lake’s
Mt. Saint Helens posted: 5/31/09 by Julia
Mt. St. Helens, along with Mt. Hood and Mt. Adams, looms over Portland. On our first day in Portland we took a walk in a park near Elizabeth’s parents’ house and at one point we could see two huge singular mountains, one to the north and one to the east. The perfectly conical, snow-draped, and picture perfect mountain to the east was Mt. Hood and the flat-topped sleeping giant to the north...(read more)

San Diego Roots: Food for All posted: 5/5/09 by John
After a moment’s hesitation, I walk into the meeting for San Diego Roots Sustainable Food Project. Once more, I’m late, unprepared, and a bit frazzled from getting lost. I managed to get turned around on the way here (about a mile from our hostel), overshoot the food co-op where the meeting is being held, and then have trouble finding the meeting room. And this time, I have to do it all alone. I left Julia sleeping at the Ocean

Each time the doors opened a fresh burst of cold air blew in, college students bundled in jackets and hoodies tracking in winter wind and leaf meal. Has it already been so long that I don’t feel like one of them anymore?
We sipped hot chocolate at the Daily Grind as we discussed this project. I should have talked to her earlier. This isn’t just a lark, but I hadn’t given it

We left Takoma Park, driving away from our apartment of two years. The rooms were now empty and the car packed full. Rain fell from a cold and gray sky, a normal day in DC in February. We were leaving home, but maybe we weren’t. America isn’t that far away, right?
Beltway traffic was as slow as to be expected during rush hour. I was ok with that, it gave me a

Kendall, one of Circle C’s employees, says he has to bring some equipment over to the docks anyway, so we hop into the truckbed and he drives us over to the dock where Circle C’s oysters are grown. The wind blows in biting off the river. I pull my jacket down lower and zip up tight. We smile to each other as Kendall unlocks the gate to the dock. We are actually doing this. Last night we walked barefoot to the White House.
The night was cool and a fine mist fell. I realized probably a mile down 16th St. that we should have probably put on shoes before we had run out onto the street, but we didn’t care. Adrenaline and the chanting in the air kept me warm. Obama! Obama! and Yes We
